Alice (1988), also known as Neco z Alenky, is a film directed by Jan Svankmajer. Known by many from the Disney classic, this film is a much darker version of the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

The contrast between stop-motion and real-life characterisations is so distinctive. Bringing in elements of thriller to the film, whilst keeping the childlike elements to the story. The clip I have linked is a good example of this.

The Rabbit from Alice

Main character Alice, played by Kristýna Kohoutová, follows her stuffed rabbit through multiple desk drawers deeper and deeper into wonderland. The strange animation, crossed with the use of sound effects, creates an eerie atmosphere throughout the film.

This is must-watch film is an incredibly eccentric version of the book and an unforgettable one at that. The creative qualities within the process of making it deserve that or high praise.
