Within this post, I shall be discussing the 2020 Gorillaz album, titled Strange timez. I will be discussing my pick of the top three songs of the album.
- Momentary Bliss:
This song will forever remind me of getting ready before my Monday morning university lecture and finding the time to play only this song (says a lot about my time management, I know). If you listen to the lyrics I think they will resonate with you as they did with me, and the other people I know that enjoy it. The lyrics slot perfectly into this modern day world of youth who have to live their lives on social media. Which, is hard in the way that it shows you everything, everyone. You tend to get told you’re not good enough, pretty enough, slim enough etc. Often it feels like you’re being pushed to the ground and told ‘You wish’ and it’s usually yourself who does it. So, for the lyrics to sit with me and tell me ‘It makes me sick to think you feel unhappy in your skin’, made the song more powerful and I would highly recommend you read them.
This tune is given a ranking of second place, it’s brilliant and inspiring for the time. But, not the catchiest riff out of the album.
2. Désole
The animated band members floated their way to France. The song has a beautiful melody that relaxes every aspect of the mind. This simple sound consists of rich vocals that harmonically riff the song into a glorious beat unlike others on this album.
3. Aries
Aries. I will never forget first hearing this. If you haven’t already, take the time now to bless your ears. This song for me is the song of Lockdown (March 2020), the lyrics speak wise words that at the time were very much thought of by all, over the top of the spacial rhythm that sends you into a state away from reality, is an overload of sensory visions.
These three songs are the memorable leave behinds from the fully packed album, there’s so many collaborations and unique styles of music involved. So a full listen is vital for a grasp of just how open the band ( Damon Albarn) is to other artists and experimental sound.
