Five Under-rated Music Artists You Need To Hear!

Need some new music? This shouldn’t disappoint. Some soft blues, indie rock and electronic music for you to experiment with. I’ll be suggesting you my favourite song by each of these artists and leaving you to decipher for yourself if it’s significant to you.

5. Cold War Kids

The band members of Cold War Kids

Cold War Kids is an American band of five members, including Nathan Willett, Matt Maust, David Quon, Matthew Schwartz, and Joe Plummer. They began in 2004, creating music of an indie rock sound. The song of theirs I’ve chosen for you is Hang Me Out To Dry.

The riff of the guitars is strong and blunt yet softens. Which compares beautifully to the innocence of the lyrics and harsh syncopated drum rhythm. If you were to listen to this, all I’d ask is for you to appreciate the guitars. Heavy, yet turn into ripples after the peak of the chorus. ‘

‘You’ve rung me out to to too many times’

4. Modest Mouse

The band members of Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse, an American band I’ve always admired. The group contains Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green, and Eric Judy. Once again, known for producing indie rock, with quite an unusual flare. I struggled to pick just one song, but I decided on King Rat. Highly recommend watching the music video for this one, cannot listen to the song in the same way after seeing it.

My favourite thing about this band is their creativity with making the sound. If you listen closely, singer Isaac Brook uses his voice as you would a physical instrument. He can manipulate the effect and unleash absolutely anything. This band truly does stand alone.

3. LCD Soundsystem

James Murphy

They may not be as under-rated as I perceive them to be, but deserve to be raved about a lot more. Producer/singer James Murphy formed the band in 2002 and ventures through various styles of music. Mostly in electronic and dance. Choosing one song is especially hard for this one, I recommend to delve into their music history, as I may pick one song not for you out of the many that could be. The tune that stands out for me, is called Dance Yrself Clean… yes, it’s a long one. Trust me.

All I can accompany this with, is that it relaxes you. Then, out of nowhere. It becomes a beat for you to bop your head to. In the driving seat, it just leads you down a path, if you’ll allow it. I’ve created bonds with people I barely knew over this song. Adore it.

2. Alabama Shakes

The band members of Alabama Shakes

You may be starting to believe I don’t know the meaning of the word under-rated. Don’t blame you. This band is an American group, including members Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, Heath Fogg, and Steve Johnston. They consist of songs within a blues-rock and soul category.

I have an outstanding favourite for this group (not that they are a one-hit-wonder). Sound and color, in my opinion, is one of the best songs placed on this earth. If you are to take any-one song away from this post, let it be this one. Words cannot describe, it fills your ears with vibrant sound, fits the title perfectly. I imagine if sound and colour had a noise, it would be this, or more specifically, just the introduction. Also, it never gets old, just takes you back to when you first heard it. You’re welcome.

  1. Rufus WainWright
Rufus Wainwright

Last one. This man has a voice to fuel your emotional stance. An outstanding singer, Rufus Wainwright should be at the top of your slow-song playlist. I found his work on a low day and have been forcing him into people’s ears ever since. There are too many songs to choose from, might be giving you two songs. I’ll just mention that I found him through Nick Hornby’s 31 Songs book (an amazing read). I actually did a brief review of it that I recommend you have a look at. In the book, Hornby discusses his song One Man Guy and I will always be infatuated with it. It has an acceptance for enjoying time alone, I had never heard that in a song before. Very refreshing, but not the song I wish to suggest to you.

The Art Teacher by Rufus Wainwright, the flatmates I had in university halls will remember this one. The velvet voice alongside the blanket of a piano melody creates an ambiance so rare, that you can picture the story he is telling.

This concludes my list. Thank you for reading, any feedback would be appreciated.
